Various Artists - Open Your Mind(Psyilocybin Sounds)
In the words of compiler, DJ Stodmeister, the aim of Open Your Mind is to promote new psychedelic music to the “un-educated masses”. Depending on how the term “psychedelic” is interpreted (to quote Wikipedia “A psychedelic experience is characterised by the perception of aspects of one's mind previously unknown, or by the creative exuberance of the mind liberated from its ostensibly ordinary fetters.”) may determine how successful the compilation is. That the material is influenced by (or likened to) the myriad of artists that are considered psychedelic is undoubted. It focuses on the more accessible edge of the genre(s). There is late 60’s ethnic inflection (The Saffron Sect), tripped out Byrds, early 80’s Liverpudlian-esque psych-pop (The Early Days’ “Flowers” and The Blue Angel Lounge’s “The God”), late 80’s shoegaze and jangle-pop and Spacemen 3 inspired drone rock (House of Fire’s “Windows and Doors”). The Myrrors’ “Cross Amber Antlers” should be considered the highlight yet it will possibly be overshadowed by the inclusion the Brian Jonestown Massacre track “Thoughts of You (Too)” (a vintage, unofficially released track) which will attract a certain audience to which this offering will be gratefully received. There is perhaps a touch too much garage-a-la-the-likes-of-Black-Rebel-Motorcycle-Club and while not necessarily inducing previously unknown experiences, it is certainly enjoyable, dreamy escapism.
