We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls (FatCat)
The Water Of Leith is running blue with fresh Scottish blood, ready to nourish the flourishing music scene in Edinburgh. Not literally, I should point out. Although the Scottish capital has a thriving arts scene, it has long been known as the country's second musical city after Glasgow, but this is all set to change with the surfacing of a number of noticeably excellent bands like Come On Gang! and FOUND, who are proving themselves as creative forces to be reckoned with on a worldwide scale, having been invited to play at this year's SxSW festival. They were joined in Texas by fellow Edinburghers, We Were Promised Jetpacks, currently with a tender average age of just 21, played their first gig at their High School Battle Of The Bands, where they emerged victorious. They soon made a habit of this, playing a string of high energy, explosive shows, which would get them noticed by FatCat Records, with whom they would join forces to record their debut album 'These Four Walls'. Of course, that all sounds ideal, simple and lovely, but it's important to remember the sweat, saliva and tears that were inevitably spent along the way. All this exertion oozes from this fine debut that is sure to earn them many new ears. Almost entirely live, with only minimal tweaks here and there, the record has successfully managed to harness the group's youthful exuberance. The deep romantic sensibility of their poignant lyrics is communicated in Adam Thompson's affecting Scottish brogue. 'These Four Walls' consistently balances confidence and power with melodic perfection, ensuring that they won't need those jetpacks to fly high after all.
