Larry Jon Wilson - S/T (1965 Records)
A new Larry Jon Wilson album doesn’t come round every day. Indeed, they don’t come round most decades. His previous record was 1979’s Sojourner, after which he decided, or Nashville decided, that they didn’t quite fit. A shame, because the promise Wilson showed on his first two albums, New Beginnings and Let Me Sing My Song To You, indicated a considerable talent, a songwriter who fell somewhere between the swampy Tony Joe White and the Texas troubadours Guy Clark and Willie Nelson. Older now and wiser (though Wilson never sounded anything but old and wise) his latest record plays to the same strengths they’ve always done. Songs which seem to touch on subjects that most avoid, stripped back acoustic arrangements which has never been the norm in Nashville, and arrangements which are always slightly askew. I’m not sure there’s a new fanbase out there waiting to discover Wilson, but I’m sure there’s and old one who can’t quite believe their luck.
