Kim Richey
The Musician, Leicester
Sunday 18th May 2008
What is a talented singer songwriter called Kim Richey, who has a stunning voice, with a great back catalogue of songs doing in Leicester on a Sunday night? Entertaining an appreciative full Musician crowd of course! This was a great show from the get go. She kicked off with “Those Words We Said” which is track one from eponymous CD one. This song has more hooks than a fisherman’s hat! Ably assisted by Jez Ashurst on lead guitar and vocals this was a great start. Then she just played song after song from every CD she has made. A particular favourite on the night being “Straight As The Crow Flies”.
She is a true songwriter’s songwriter, and her roll call of co-writes is impressive as she introduces the songs: John Leventhall (“I Know”), Joan Osbourne (“Not A Love Like This”) and a brand new one co-written with Mark Olsen (ex Jayhawks) called “A Long Time From Now”.
She is touring to promote her latest CD Chinese Boxes and she leaves a run of these songs until towards the end, where she plays “Jack and Jill”, “Chinese Boxes” and “Not A Love Like This”. Richey is very comfortable with both her audience and herself and this was apparent during the solo on “Not A Love Like This”. Jez Ashurst totally plays the wrong solo (well it is the first night of the tour!) and she laughs so much she starts to cry. Eventually an audience member gives her a tissue, and with a quick wipe of the eyes, it’s 1, 2 ,3, 4 and back into the song - a real trooper.
A great show that highlighted her entire catalogue it ended appropriately enough with the audience favourite “I’m Alright”, with the Musician crowd taking over the singing of the chorus. When she is next in your town, go see her - you won’t be disappointed.
