Inneke 23 & The Lipstick Painters - Charcoal (CoraZong)
For all their hipster indie / alt. country afflictions, there’s something reassuringly traditional about Inneke 23 & The Lipstick Painters. Produced by Chris Eckman, Charcoal is a walk(about) on the dark side of the street, but lyrically they’re “rambling and a roaming” on “Night At The Crossroads” and there’s “crying on your pillow” in “I’d Rather Be A Fair Play Loser”. They manage to squeeze in references to Gram Parsons on both “Star Car” and an interesting cover of The Stranglers’ “No More Heroes”, which they manage to stamp their identity on by losing the more memorable couplets. Like a cross between the storyville approach of Gloria Deluxe and the ragged urban country of Freakwater, they’re in turns moody, literate, banjo-friendly and genuinely funny. I’m sure there’s an audience for what they’re doing, and I wish them luck finding it. www.corazong.com
