Charlie Wood - Flutter and Wow (Archer Records)
Poised precariously between a less caustic Randy Newman and a fizzed up Mose Allison, “Flutter and Wow” could be Memphis-born Charlie Wood’s bid for the Cocktail Hour Soundtrack of the Year. Inevitably his jazz-lite renditions of modern day standards from Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon and Tom Waits will promote a marmite-esque division between Norah Jones fans (she and Woods share a Producer in Adam Levy) and defenders of the songs’ traditional arrangements. On the credit side Wood’s smoky voice is palatable enough, his band bounces along in jolly fashion, and the Costello-penned title track lends itself to the mood. Less encouraging is the quality of his self-penned songs, which generally don’t match up to those borrowed from elsewhere, and a tendency to overuse his undoubted keyboard talents to the point of distraction. www.archer-records.com
