Cara Dillon - Hill Of Thieves (Charcoal)
Produced by husband Seth Lakeman (does this make them the Mutt and Shania of UK and Irish folk music? Shit, I hope not. Apologies for even thinking it, and double that for writing it down...), Cara Dillon’s latest is a home-made delight and, apart from the title track, is a collection of traditional and some not so obvious cover songs. Everything is approached with an amiable, good natured charm, with Dillon’s voice taking its rightful place, centre stage. Her versions of familiar material like “Spencer The Rover” and “She Moves Through The Fair” are truly inspired and although it’s impossible to make songs such as these one’s own, she certainly stamps her mark on them. It’s interesting that the album’s opening cut, the eponymous “Hill Of Thieves” not only stands tall amongst its more famous neighbours, but actually offers up enough to be considered for classic status at some point in the not too distant future. www.caradillon.co.uk
