Dave Mason - Dave Mason / Split Coconut (BGO Records)
A solid 2on1 from BGO featuring a couple of Dave Mason’s mid-70s releases. His self-tilted record, originally released in 1974, was his fifth studio effort away from Traffic, and continued his drift away from his earlier progressive sound to a softer pop-rock style. It was recorded with his then touring band, including guitarist Jim Krueger who would later write Mason’s biggest hit of the 70s, the horrendously catchy “We Just Disagree”. It’s an enjoyable collection, with a brilliant version of Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” (Mason had played on the Hendrix version, six years earlier), together with other favourites from the period, including a re-recorded “Every Woman” and the Traffic-like “Relation Ships”. The second album here, Split Coconut, provides an equal amount of pleasure in its rediscovery. The title track is full of funky goodness, an excellent version of Buddy Holly’s “Crying, Waiting and Hoping” continues the winning streak, and “Give Me A Reason Why” and the guitar heavy “Long Lost Friend” provide later highlights. This worthy collection may not be the best place to start discovering Dave Mason’s ongoing solo career (check out BGO’s Alone Together / Headkeeper release for instant gratification), but if you’re already convinced, this is a fine addition to any Traffic related collection. www.dave-mason.com / www.bgo-records.com
