Alan Curtis - More Than I Can Be (Holc. Inv. Inc.)
More Than I Can Be is Alan Curtis’s first solo release after an illustrious career in the Manitoba scene, fronting various bands. Curtis is obviously a fine songwriter and is able to carry a tune with the aplomb of Paul Carrack and the angsty delivery of Elvis Costello. If his influences are sometimes manifest, this just makes for an accessible and accomplished set. Closing track “Greed (Money, Money , Money)” could have been written for the credit crunch generation and has a chorus that sticks like a bad reputation. “I Wanted To Write You A Love Song” is almost folksy, but the overriding feeling is of eighties pop/rock, Nick Lowe era Stiff stuff. I hope this isn’t more than there can be of Alan Curtis, because there is room in the world for more from a talented performer.
