Gina Villalobos - Days On Their Side (Face West)
Now on her third album, Gina Villalobos, a regular visitor to the UK, continues to batter at the door of a major breakthrough. As with previous records, Villabobos proves she’s both the songs and the attitude to go all the way, and indicates that with the right kind of luck, label, exposure, whatever, she’s the heir apparent to Lucinda Williams’ crown. Not that Williams was an overnight sensation, by any means. This all comes down to authenticity, and Villalobos in the real deal, for sure. Unapologetic, unafraid of telling it like it is and fully aware of her Americana heritage - a list that includes a couple of Williams, a Cash and a whole family of Carters. Days On Their Side does most things right. Emotional but never cloying, muscular but not overbearing, her songs deal with many of the same topics and concerns as her contemporaries, but her approach seems both timeless and often strikingly original. For example, opening cut ”Take A Beating” and its “I want to take a beating with you” chorus - is there any other alt. country singer-songwriter out there bonding through masochism, and making it sound so right?
