Kevin Carini – Music Of The Spheres (Independent)
Kevin Carini, a native of Earth (the USA to be more precise, though further details are sketchy) has named his new 5-track EP from an Albert Einstein quotation. Indications are he takes his music seriously, and rightly so. His approach draws inspiration from resolute travelers such as Pink Floyd and early Pearl Jam, and the result is something that can be called heavy folk - probably without fear of contradiction.
He takes a classic singer-songwriter style and slips it into a contemporary rock setting. It’s an interesting juxtaposition, and one that readily draws the listener in. Perhaps the standout track is “Playing Poker With Politicians” with its powerful rolling melody and just the right amount of righteous anger. “Gypsy Eyes” runs it a close second, employing a dense post-punk production, but never losing sight of the song. Indeed, that’s the lasting impression of Carini and Music Of The Spheres. This is an artist completely at ease with contemporary rock, but whatever he throws into the mix, and most of these tracks carry a solid production, his songs always shine through.
