Demetri Martin These Are Jokes (Comedy Central)
“If I ever saw an amputee being hanged… I would yell out some letters”. Just a single example of Demetri Martin’s near-infinite supply of askew one-liners. After successful TV appearances, Edinburgh festivals and the inevitable Perrier Award, the natural next step is the record, and on These Are Jokes, he doesn’t disappoint. Over two discs (one audio, one DVD), the American comic relentlessly delivers gags, and all we have to do is sit back and chuckle. The gently surreal style will offend no-one, and much like Steven Wight or Eddie Izzard (albeit in men’s clothing), it’s best just to relax and go with the comedic flow, as Martin jumps from one bizarre observation to the next. Be careful with the CD. There’s lots of very funny material here, and if you listen to it in public on headphones, you’ll laugh and others will point, stare and mock. The DVD features some animation, a couple of early performances (one very good, the second, better), some songs, and the Comedy Central performance that initially provided his breakthrough.
