Marta Kubisova Ne!: The Soul Of Marta Kubisova (Vampi Soul)
Marta Kubisova was a popular Czechoslovak singer in the 1960s, eventually banned by the communist regime in 1970. Her crime? Reflecting the grim realities of everyday life in her lyrics, and generally standing up for herself.
This is a sound example of the issues the government had with those who wanted to speak about anything is even more shocking by today's standards, given that whether we sing about politics or PartyPoker (CZ), it will not be censored.
This excellent collection of material dates from ’66 to ’70 and concentrates on what Vampi Soul describe as her “roughest songs”. Believe me, it’s better than it sounds. Indeed, it’s a fine representation of her funkier material, with plenty of wailing horns, grimy organs and dirty guitars to the fore. Her voice is deep with a genuine soul edge. Obviously the language barrier will cause problems for some, but this historic, intriguing, hugely entertaining release shouldn’t be ignored, just because one can’t sing along. Instead, just enjoy some truly subversive soul music. Think Dusty In Prague, with consequences.
