UUVVWWZ – S/T (Saddle Creek)
The awkwardness of pronunciation of UUVVWWZ (it’s double U, double V, double W, Zee to clear that up – the English Zed doesn’t work!!) is a fair indicator of their artistic intention: taking something recognisable and screwing with it. Although utilising the classic rock ensemble of guitar, bass, drums and vocals their output steers pretty clear of any rock clichés. That is not to say they do not draw influence from, and comparisons with other outfits. Teal Gardner’s vocals have New/No Wave and improvised inflections and she steers her anti-thematic, catchy but cryptic lyrics between shrill girlish playfulness and blues seriousness. The song structures are seemingly loose and uncomplicated yet jagged and angular and the well-choreographed abrupt halts and changes means that passages of subtle temperament can become abrasive in an instant. “Castle” as the album’s centrepiece is a perfect showcase, drawing on all of their traits. Very cool, very Art-House, very punk and the oft-cited Captain Beefheart, Melt Banana and Deerhoof comparisons are not wide of the mark.
