The Gentle Good - While You Slept I Went Out Walking (Gwymon)
Gareth Bonello (aka The Gentle Good) has been wowing the Cardiff folk scene since 2003 with his interpretations of traditional songs, and his own original material. On his debut album he sings in both English and Welsh; a collection which indicates a subtle grounding in acoustic blues together with obvious folk influences. His voice is soft and warm, and his readings are detailed and involving, with full production and instrumentation. Bonello plays guitar, cello, banjo, piano and mandolin, whilst Seb Goldfinch fiddles and Harriet Earis plucks a harp. As a non-Welsh speaker, my favourites are, unsurprisingly, two of the English sung songs. “A Man Made Of Moss” is pure acoustic honey, sweet as sugar and beautifully evocative of times long gone. “Waiting For Jane” does much the same, with burnished guitars and a melodic hook that sinks deep. A charming collection which’ll get better with each spin. www.myspace.com/gentlegood
