Brown Recluse - Evening Tapestry (Slumberland Records)
Brown Recluse formed in 2006 as a duo and along the way have released two EPs and expanded into a six-piece, before releasing “Evening Tapestry”, their debut LP. It’s a luxuriously produced, light, bright and pastoral psych pop affair and totally lovely. Though if you were to glance through the sleevenotes prior to listening, the gloomy sounding lyrics to “Hobble to Your Tomb” and “March to Your Tomb” – that bookend the album – you might not get the right impression.
Indeed, the listening experience could be likened to running through a field of long grassy musical influences and emerging infected by the various pollens of ‘50s and ‘60s pop and folk. Never a chance of outstaying their welcome the eleven short tracks are embellished with found sound, light psychedelic effects and electronica and stand shoulder to shoulder with the Zombies, Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys, Beulah and Belle & Sebastian. Highlights of their perfectly crafted pop are “Monday Moon” and “Impressions of a City Morning”.
