Kyle Vincent - Where You Are (SongTree)
Californian, sunshine flecked, singer-songwriter Kyle Vincent has been a constant on the power pop scene for as long as I can remember. His inspiration over a two decade career, apart from McCartney and The Beatles, has always been classic 1970’s pop and soft rock radio. Think the Raspberries, Corgis and Elton, and fill in the gaps for yourself. Where You Are is his tenth album, and while I can’t make any rash claims about hearing all the others, I’ve heard my fair share, and this stands up with the best of them. He’s in fine voice, lyrically it’s strong, the hooks are sharp and the production - Vincent with his knob twiddling hat on - is lush and energised, without being overbearing. The standout material, “Emily Standing”, a co-production with Parthenon Huxley, is sugary sweet, but not without bite. “It’s Gonna Be A Great Day” is what I want to wake up to from the beginning of May to the end of September, and “Goin’ Down” is a blast of power pop magic, rooted in the firm belief that a Beatles inspired melody grafted onto some Rubinoos oomph may just be enough to save the world from corporate pop-pap. Wizard.
