Sandy Zio - All That I Am (Independent)
If Sandy Zio ever decides to give up singing, she can always fill up her time with her hobby, which looks to be collecting extremely talented musicians. All That I Am is full of them. Most of Billy Joel’s band seem to be present, as do Harry Connick Jr.’s keyboard player, John Waite’s guitarist and James Taylor’s trumpet man. It’s a veritable treasure chest of major league musicians, so it’s a little disappointing that much of the material on this debut release is so desperately middle of the road. I’ve no argument at all with the quality of Zio’s voice, but it’s never stretched in any substantial way and the arrangements suck any of the soul and swing which these fine jazz-pop songs seem to demand. A wasted opportunity, I’m afraid. www.sandyzio.com
