Laura Gibson - If You Come To Greet Me (Borne!)
This is why American indie kids all secretly crave backporches and uncomfortable alfresco seating - so they can listen to music like this. If You Come To Greet Me has finally received the European release it deserves, thanks to the Spanish label, Borne, a subsidiary of the always interesting Acuarela set-up. Gibson’s take on old small-town Americana is beautifully sparse even when the band (Norfolk & Western) are playing around her, and her debut, though steeped in traditional influences is wholly contemporary in both its uncluttered production and its lyrical attraction to the everyday. That’s not to say it’s either overly workmanlike or too earthy in its execution. Gibson has an eye for the surreal (“Broken Bottle”) and isn’t adverse to injecting a little humour (“Country, Country”) when the mood takes. There are UK dates in June - look out for them. www.acuareladiscos.com
