Quiet Village - Silent Movie (K7)
Musical archivists and collectors Matt Edwards and Joel Martin call themselves Quiet Village, so I guess they’re more than a little familiar with easy-listening guru and band leader Martin Denny’s brand of groundbreaking tropical exotica - opening cut “Victoria’s Secret” even has a smattering of birdsong in the mix, so the theory is easily confirmed. But that’s just a part of what these two are about. Epic soul, Latin horror movie soundtracks and library music all appear to be integral parts of their masterplan, and the result is a collection that is quirky and fun, but underpinned with real substance. Silent Movie may well become my default barbecue CD this summer, but that should no way diminish an album that will get a small percentage of nerdy pop music fans extremely moist. www.k7.com
