Catherine MacLellan - Water In The Ground (True North Records)
I’m new to the music of Canadian singer songwriter Catherine MacLellan so it is refreshing to listen to her, without possessing any preconceived ideas. Water In The Ground, her third release, comes across as a warm, roots(y), melodic affair. The easy playfulness of opener “Take A Break” sets a light tone with it’s catchy walking bass lines. The attractive electric lead guitar of Nick Cobham (a useful ally throughout), particularly on the title song, highlights Catherine’s ability to pen a catchy number. The use of accordion and mandolin adds to the texture of the track. The theme of going home, and the pleasant surprise of a romantic liaison, makes for a warm, positive song. Catherine’s easy, comfortably relaxed vocal style comes across well throughout. The playing, and production, is solid too with good contributions from David Baxter and Justin Rutledge amongst others. The music has a light airy feel to it, perfect for the summer months. It goes down well with a fine glass of wine! Ms. MacLellan sounds in total control of her music and direction. Let’s hope she maintains an independent streak and doesn’t meander towards the middle of the road like some ‘famous’ contemporaries I could name, but won’t. Thoughtfully packaged, with the free addition of her debut CD Dark Dream Midnight, you can’t go far wrong with this one. (7/10)
