Joey Negro and the Sunburst Band - Moving With The Shakers (Z Records)
Under various aliases Dave Lee has apparently achieved more Top 40 crossovers than any other UK House producer including most notably Take That’s “Relight My Fire”. Whilst producing his seemingly his claim to fame, Lee has recorded his third album with The Sunburst Band under his most familiar guise of Joey Negro. Moving With The Shakers contains 17 tracks of sunny funk featuring a variety of guests and friends such as Leroy Burgess and Taka Boom. The results are mixed however, with “Rough Times”, “Sitting On Top Of The World” and a cover of Bowie’s “Fashion” standing head and shoulders above the rest. At almost eighty minutes it’s a little too long and at times their lyrics verge on the wrong side of pretentious, ‘Being human means we’re flawed’ during “Our Lives Are Shaped” is a good case in point. The vision is clearly there, but it is yet to be fully determined. Maybe next time. www.joeynegro.com
