Setting Sun - Children Of The Wild
Quitzow - Art College
Setting Sun are kind of the Broken Social Scene of San Francisco stable Young Love Records. Essentially the brainchild of producer Gary Levitt, he brings in the cream of the local scene to appear on this, their third album. Although Children Of The Wild is an indie album to the core, at no point is it done by numbers. Subtle, catchy melodies punctuate throughout with Levitt and fellow label mate Erica Quitzow sharing vocal duties. “What We Wanted” is a lo-fi Modest Mouse and while several tracks recall Bright Eyes, the album retains its uniqueness. Pity the soulless demon who fails to crack a smile to “Happy Song”.
If they really are the BSS of Young Love Records then Quitzow is surely their Feist. Her solo album is full of twisted pop tracks with electronic backing. Take “Cats R People 2” for instance, surely song of the year for animal lovers everywhere. Occasionally Art College seems to be the album Portishead would have made if they had spent nine years listening to Girls Aloud instead of Krautrock and although this is mainly an upbeat affair, there is an occasional dark edge such as in the slightly sinister title track.
These acts tour Europe together in November and for many, it can’t come soon enough.
