Chuck Dukowski Sextet - Reverse The Publicity (Nice And Friendly)
With wife Lora Norton on vocals and son Milo Gonzales shredding guitar, ex-Black Flagman Dukowski might be keeping his band a family affair, but there’s nothing cosy about the sound they make. Big fuck-off psyche guitar and Norton’s distressed howl dominate their songs, but it never crosses the line into pure noise and instead whips up something which in turn reminds the listener of classic Jane’s Addiction, Hole at their most likeable and Kim fronted Sonic Youth. Overall, it’s a capital rumpus they’ve spawned, heavy and tough, and easy to take to. It helps that like most hardcore albums, it doesn’t overstay it’s welcome and, apart from some mildly annoying kiddie banter between songs (I accept my admonishment in advance if said sprog turns out to be another Dukowski offspring), it works equally well through earphones or slamming mindlessly into walls. Well done. www.thechuckdukowskisextet.com
