The Tisdales - Bakers Dozen (SMA Records)
The Tisdales are the new band formed by Rich Mattson, who some of you might know from his previous outfit, Ol’ Yeller. If Ol’ Yeller slipped under your radar, you missed out, but hey-ho, times change, and now it’s The Tisdales you need to check out. Fronted by Mattson and ex-Giljunko / Hotel Coral Essex man Tony Derrick, The Tisdales make tidy work of their midwest punk ‘n’ roll aspirations. The Replacements cast a long shadow over this sort of thing and The Tisdales doff their cap in Westerberg and co.’s direction on a number of occasions. “Like A Horse” is a prime example. A rolling chant of a song that sounds like it was written and recorded half cut. “Faces” is pure ‘60s pop, roughed up down a dark alley and left with a mid ‘80s Minneapolis sheen (and a broken nose). No one would claim what Mattson and his buddies are doing is cutting edge, but they do sound like they’re having a lot of fun, and that can be infectious. And what with the ongoing success of The Hold Steady, if their luck holds out, it might be enough. www.myspace.com/wearethetisdales
