Kleveland - Harder (In Music We Trust)
It can be fascinating checking out a band's MySpace page and comparing their listed influences to their own style and sound. For Kleveland it's pretty straightforward, though interesting nonetheless. Iggy Pop, The Runaways, Ramones, Supersuckers and The Sonics - yep, I get all that. Elliott Smith, Neil Young and Liz Phair are all less obvious influences, but after repeated spins, they're all there. But, and it's a biggun', where the fuck does Olivia Newton John come into it? Maybe it's a live thing. It's possible that when they're on a stage, guitarist / vocalist Stephanie Smith has got a 'Physical' thing going on. I hope so, because that might just be the cherry on top of this band's full-of-goodness garage-punk-pop cake. Full throttle opener 'Do It Big' is a monster slice of Brian James(esque) guitar with Smith yelping her catchy as hell song over the top. 'Golden Gloves' packs a punch (sorry) with its love as violence imagery and Blackhearts referencing riffing. 'Sloppy Seconds' is the acoustic slowie, for the hound on the rebound and 'Crutch' is as you'd expect to be.

They've made a classy vampire video for 'You're Not Sorry' - watch it here:
