Holly Sedgwick - Red Fish In Your Sky (Independent)
Painter, performer and mother of six, Holly Sedgwick’s new record is a treat for those of us who enjoy our singer-songwriters at the jazzier end of the spectrum. Joni Mitchell is the obvious reference point for all female singer-songwriters who employ ambitious arrangements, though there’s no easy comparison here. Sedgwick’s band, including her partner Tom Hazlitt, provide backing which blends effortlessly with her winsomely fragile vocal, though lyrically astute, is presented as another, altogether earthier instrument. It’s an enjoyable collection with a couple of real standout moments, namely “Eclipse My Heart”, which showcases Hazlitt’s Erroll Garner inspired piano runs, and the classy opening cut, “Our House Burnt Blue”. www.myspace.com/hollypsedgwick
