Po’ Girl - Deer In The Night (Independent)
Po’ Girl’s fifth album continues Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira urban roots odyssey, this time accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Ben Sidelinger and drummer, JJ Jones. As you’re probably all aware, Po’ Girl albums are routinely flush with their various influences, whether it’s old time country, jazz or Eastern European folk, and they consistently integrate the charm of their live performances into their records. Deer In The Night continues the trend, but that’s just a bonus, the rich sauce on the meaty songs, and these are fine cuts, indeed. The title track is a prime example of everything they do well; a harmony drenched soul-folk song, with a death on the side of the road. “Dig Me A Hole” takes things in a jazzier direction, without losing sight of their roots and “Grace”, with it’s otherworldly backing and backporch lyricism wouldn’t have sounded out of place on Emmylou’s Wrecking Ball record. They’re at The Musician (in Leicester) on June 2nd - I’ll see you there. Everyone else should check out their MySpace page for all other dates. www.myspace.com/pogirls
