55 Blues - Doragons (Neigh Music)
Layer upon layer of freely improvised instrumentation, fragmented percussion and glitched samples form the basis of 55 Blues’ Doragons. “Hats Bandit” opens the show with a deconstructed slide guitar, but that’s the nearest to a blues comparison. As a whole it passes fleetingly through many genres without stopping for long enough to fully take on the tone of any of them. “Vine Hunting” never quite makes funk and the later numbers draw upon an antagonistic violin, akin to that of punk-folk-niks The Holy Modal Rounders, but never quite becomes freak-folk. Likened to a radio whose dial is constantly being rotated but never quite tuning in, Doragons is carefree and absorbing, uneasy yet never unsettling. It’s noise has passivity and avoids overwhelming volume for its lure.
